Archives for March, 2009

For this last episode of the first series, I would like to summarize the Archive -Practice proposition by way of some observations, which will also suggest the direction for the next phase of development. The first section of the proposition was developed through constructing dialogs and relations made by my interviews with people whose work represent different practices within the Armenian contemporary art field.

border06_thumb“Limes” is a latin word that modern historians gave to the system of Roman fortifications established all along the borders of the Empire. It physically signals limits between territories, in terms of customs as well as with defensive aims. This terminology has been revived for the creation of a typography, “Limes New Roman”, registered by the artistic cooperative Société Réaliste and published in the Icon’s part of the issue #35 of the journal Multitudes, in winter 2009.

Twilight zoneIn this twilight episode, I would like to consider the two aspects of our collective work. This consists on the one hand, of our research over these last six weeks, in and through the Web, and on the other hand, the very physical space that will frame our project at the end of the year. While the form of the blog, defined as a short term work, led us to favor mediated connections and meetings, how do we present and represent ourselves there?

BorderXing GuidesThe internet space is more than the succession of web-pages, electronic letter boxes, online games and communities. It is a real space for political fights of engaged campaigns, actions, from which rise contestation’s voices and new activism’s generation, as for example, the artist Heath Bunting in his BorderXing Guide project.

The between tradition and contemporary or past and adventure, there is no real opposition, and that what we called cultural heritage, it isn’t limited to relics of the past. Although it is based on the traditional significance, at the same time it has the existing state oneself nowadays.

Crossing-views onlineThis fourth post is a part of my third episode. The interview I made with Marianna Hovhannisyan, a young curator and co-editor of this blog, questions the topic she chose as it is connected to the notion of identity and representation through online positions. By choosing this methodology Marianna proposes a definition of history, memory and archive, through taking a position of acting on it by the interviews about education and collaboration. She expresses that this process of archiving can help her to have a reflection on what is her role in the ongoing contemporary art and curatorial practice in Armenia.
