Archives for 2009

For this last episode of the first series, I would like to summarize the Archive -Practice proposition by way of some observations, which will also suggest the direction for the next phase of development. The first section of the proposition was developed through constructing dialogs and relations made by my interviews with people whose work represent different practices within the Armenian contemporary art field.

border06_thumb“Limes” is a latin word that modern historians gave to the system of Roman fortifications established all along the borders of the Empire. It physically signals limits between territories, in terms of customs as well as with defensive aims. This terminology has been revived for the creation of a typography, “Limes New Roman”, registered by the artistic cooperative Société Réaliste and published in the Icon’s part of the issue #35 of the journal Multitudes, in winter 2009.

Twilight zoneIn this twilight episode, I would like to consider the two aspects of our collective work. This consists on the one hand, of our research over these last six weeks, in and through the Web, and on the other hand, the very physical space that will frame our project at the end of the year. While the form of the blog, defined as a short term work, led us to favor mediated connections and meetings, how do we present and represent ourselves there?

BorderXing GuidesThe internet space is more than the succession of web-pages, electronic letter boxes, online games and communities. It is a real space for political fights of engaged campaigns, actions, from which rise contestation’s voices and new activism’s generation, as for example, the artist Heath Bunting in his BorderXing Guide project.

The between tradition and contemporary or past and adventure, there is no real opposition, and that what we called cultural heritage, it isn’t limited to relics of the past. Although it is based on the traditional significance, at the same time it has the existing state oneself nowadays.

Crossing-views onlineThis fourth post is a part of my third episode. The interview I made with Marianna Hovhannisyan, a young curator and co-editor of this blog, questions the topic she chose as it is connected to the notion of identity and representation through online positions. By choosing this methodology Marianna proposes a definition of history, memory and archive, through taking a position of acting on it by the interviews about education and collaboration. She expresses that this process of archiving can help her to have a reflection on what is her role in the ongoing contemporary art and curatorial practice in Armenia.

Voyage en URLThis article is about Collectif 1.0.3 and their multimedia work called Voyage en URL. Voyage en URL invites us to a mental trip, “a peregrination into the flow of our navigation”, made by software’s downloading (available for windows and mac) picking up and archiving, as a dynamic process that traces our drifts from one URL address to another. Here there are no palpable maps or territories but a poetic vibration which represents a digital portrait of our wanders in the spiderweb, as a virtual representation of a train of thought by the web.

Cinema

Cultural diversity has become a universal concept and it is frequently used in contemporary art and culture. However, it is doubtful whether there exists the orientation of diversity in the cultural policy between mainstream and fringe. We couldn’t help considering this problem reflecting on Screen Quota System and Cinematheque Operation System in Korea.

Migration for Education - Student projectThe third part of Archive-Practice considers the Armenian Open University, Department of Fine Arts. Since the second part of the 1980s it was one of the spaces in Yerevan which was providing an alternative for the discussions, meetings and realization of different artistic projects, as well as focusing on Armenian contemporary art developments. In 1998 it transformed into a more official space, as Department of Fine Arts which continued to provide a unique type of art education.

Vue des collections permanentes - MAMAC, Nice. This post is composed of two parts:

The first one deals with the effects and influences of the image on the representation of ourselves. The theoretical part introduces Donald Woods Winicott, an English psychiatrist, who gives definitions about the construction and development of our “Self” (French translation is “notre Moi”). How can the online life modify our representation of ourselves?
I also introduce Sherry Turkle, an American psychologist and current director of the MIT Initiative on Technology and Self. This center of research and reflection evolves connections between people and artifacts which come out in her analysis of the “subjective side” of people’s relationships with technology, especially computers.
The second part is my interview with Marianna Hovhannisyan, a young curator, concerning her personal research on the process of archiving. Her enquiry towards this topic has so far produced two interviews that are online, part of a planned sequence presenting the archives in relation with practices in the field of art.

kh2Today’s art has become by degrees subjective with cultural diversity, on the other hand art makes convocations by itself. They are sometimes collected under the authority of notion of exhibition, sometimes represent by themselves on the artistic cooperation like a case of Koo and Harvey’s Collaborations.
